About me
I was born in Melbourne and have lived most of my life here. After leaving school I completed a science degree (major in Botany) at the University of Melbourne. It was whilst studying science that I first decided to not work in Science! To earn money when I was studying I worked selling men’s suits at the Myer Chadstone store with some of the best old-school salesmen around. Towards the end of my degree, Myer offered me a place on their graduate management programme and I then held a range of management positions. It was about this time I appeared on the TV quiz show, Sale of the Century, winning a couple of cars and other items.

In 1991 I embarked upon a typically Australian adventure, the backpacking trip to Europe. I returned to Australia and completed a Graduate Diploma of Education at Ballarat University. From 1994 onwards I have been a learning professional. I’ve free-lanced on projects with businesses as diverse as community based skillshare groups through to national retail chains. From 1997 until 2004 I began working on various projects with the Coles Supermarket group and later the Coles Myer Institute where I managed a team of learning professionals designing, delivering and structuring the delivery of programs.

In 2004 I decided to leave ColesMyer and begin Michael Eury Consulting. Since then I have had the opportunity to work with DeakinPrime, Australian Retailers’ Association, Aspire Learning Resources, Monash University, hranywhere and others. Currently I write a blog on learning skills called stickylearning. I have found over the years that people working within education and learning are often the worst at looking after their own development. It was with this in mind that I began the stickylearning blog. 2010 is a year of many opportunities, to continue doing what I enjoy and to build relationships with new and interesting clients - and launch the website for Stotan Learning Design.

Family

People often ask where the name Eury comes from. Well it turns out that it is mis-spelled Scottish (was originally Ury). Michael Ury was transported to Australia from the UK in 1812 for stealing a small amount of cash from a shop, joining some of my other ancestors, including convicts from the first, second and third fleets of 1788-1791. Michael Eury (no longer Ury) had a son, also Michael who became a whaling captain and trader in the South Pacific and was the subject of books by the author Louis Becke. Since then I am the 4th generation and I live in Melbourne, Australia with my wife and growing family.

Music

Not me exactly, however most of my family are pretty musical. My brother teaches trumpet and performs in big bands and jazz quartets, see his website here, (and he has a foodie blog as well) whilst one sister teaches violin, viola and piano privately to seemingly hundreds of children! As for me, I like listening to music. Current favourites include, silverchair, Mark Seymour, Joel Plaskett and Old Man River.

Sport

I’m either fit, injured or about to get fit! I enjoy running and on the occasions when I’m fit and not injured may compete with the St Kevins Aths Club. I like running and consider around 40km a week of running to be pretty good. As for reading about sport I have a complete collection of books by Percy Cerutty along with many other sporting books from the 1920’s onwards. Other than running I get out onto my bike every now and then and ride along bike tracks rather than the road these days.

Other sporting interests are horse-racing (sort of a sport?) and get along to Flemington when I can and am a member of the Richmond Football Club (Tigers) in the AFL (Australian Rules Football) who will no doubt win the premiership next year!
